Suggestions That May Make Divorce Court Less Intimidating

On behalf of Tasha K. Schaffner of Schaffner Family Law posted in divorce on Thursday, February 1, 2018.

There are many details that must be attended to when the court day arrives, the first of which is to be as prepared as possible. Consulting with an experienced attorney can go a long way in ensuring one is able to state his or her case clearly and concisely, including having all pertinent paperwork and financial documents ready ahead of time. It may also improve one’s case to have an understanding of how the courtroom works and ensuring that one presents a respectable appearance.

In addition, it is recommended that one writes down points that he or she wants the court to consider while waiting patiently for the chance to state one’s case. It is also beneficial to leave cellular devices turned off and out of sight, as judges are not favorable toward these types of disruptions. When a spouse needs to present his or her case concerning financial aspects, it is suggested that he or she presents a reasonable request. Asking for an amount beyond what seems reasonable to the court may be counterproductive.

While a divorce trial can be an emotionally charged time, remaining calm and pleasant to the court and support personnel is more likely to cause the judge to consider one’s case favorably. The prospect of appearing before a family court can be a nerve-wracking experience. However, being carefully prepared will both ease anxiety and allow one to present the case in a professional manner. Kentucky residents who are preparing to begin their own divorce process may benefit from the assistance and guidance of their own family law attorney.
